What are Backsberg barrels doing on the front page of the Cape Times?

Mentally I had penciled in the 1st of February as the starting date for the Backsberg Blog - B's Blog - but it became fairly clear this morning when I picked up the Cape Times (click here to read the article) that the date needed to be shifted forward to today!

In short, a major container ship ran aground on Thursday off southwest England. The article in the Cape Times features a dramatic image where some not-so-happy-looking French oak barrels are strewn over a beach landscape (I could not find the Cape Times image online but the following image courtesy of the New York Times gives you a good idea of the situation)

Fortunately, whilst we were expecting a major order of barrels from France, the majority of the order was NOT on the MSC Napoli container ship, which ran aground. Only a handful of our barrels were on the ship and thus affected.

Within minutes of us hearing the news we had contacted our barrel supplier and the issue sorted out.

Backsberg wants to thank those of you who contacted us with concern over the incident and assure you that all is well at the farm.

What a brilliant idea to make a blog about the happenings at the Backsberg farm. I will with great interest follow it to learn more about your philosophy of winemaking!
